17″ Macbook Pro 3.06ghz… Possible Money Maker
I’m getting back to work here and am just going to bring you the facts this week. Today’s WMW item is the Macbook Pro 3.06ghz. I don’t know much about it, all I know is that Winona State University (laptop university) will be replacing their old macs with this model. Whether or not the specifications are the same… no clue. But what I found interesting is the substantial difference in price between Craigslist. So this week I compared Ebay to Craigslist.
Of 12 Randomly Monitored Ebay Auctions and 12 Craigslist ad items…
Highest Winning Bid/Priced ad:
- Ebay:$3689.00
- CL: $2650
Lowest Winning Bid/ Priced Ad :
- Ebay: $2526.00
- CL: $1900.00
Average Winning Bid/For Sale Price:
-
Ebay: $3238.42
-
CL: $2472.92
I’m a PC guy so this doesn’t affect me either way because I can’t afford to but one of these machines. But it’s a good subject for discussion seeing that there could potentially be an $800 profit to be made here. As usual, use common sense in buying off of Craigslist. Stay Classy Planet Earth.
Buy on Craigslist, Sell on Ebay… My 5 Steps
There are a bunch of blogs and opinions out there on how to make a buck on Ebay… but it’s easier than you might think. Because I’m constantly looking for items to post on this blog, I’m becoming an experienced Craigslister (addictive nerd). In the four items I have bought on Craigslist and Sold on Ebay I have spent $310 with a profit of $290… nearly doubling my investment. But it wasn’t luck. Here’s my tactic…
1. Keep updating Craigslist throughout the day. This is obvious. If you want to be the first in line to make the purchase, you need to be the first person to see the ad. Duh.
2. Pick your category/ies: In the case of this blog I stick to electronics. Craigslist is a large website and it’s easier to focus on one category. Pick the category that matched your interest (antiques, collectibles. etc…). Refining your focus helps you develop knowledge on reoccurring products over time.
3. Do your online research: Don’t by a CL product based off of one Ebay auction’s results. The more auctions you watch the better idea you’ll get of its worth. Check Amazon or Google it too.
4. Always ask if the seller is willing to take less: You’ve seen the asking price already and you know you’re going to make money from your research, but perhaps you could use a little side cash for shipping or the Ebay fee. It never hurts. What I have found is people will most likely say no. The main excuse is because they have a lot of interested people in the item… this goes back to being the first one to respond to the ad.
5. Sell it: If it is a popular electronic, sell it sooner rather than later (depreciation). Otherwise take more time to see similar auctions and what is working, or not working. I like to set my starting price at the price I paid initially, the only setback is that the higher the starting price, the more Ebay takes out. So if you are confident, start at a lower price… I play it safe.
So there you go. It’s not rocket science. It’s an addictive hobby because you need to be constantly monitoring new posts, but it pays dividends. And when you’re a broke college student it doesn’t hurt to have some extra ‘tuition’ money.

Today’s Worth: I would never spend $80 on a pair of ear buds for fear of losing them. I’m sure these may make a great marriage with any Ipod but why spend half the price of the Ipod on the earphones. These cutoff the outside world, so I’d imagine they would be decent for the studio or in your dorm room, and if you’re going to goo that route, you might as well buy some larger head-gear that covers your whole ear. Personally, I don’t think you can eliminate all sound with a pair of buds. Crank it Up!
